B2201 - Fantastic Large Vintage Woven Wool Tapestry Wall Hanging, 'Hunts of Maximilian'This is a fantastic large vintage tapestry wall hanging dating from the mid 1900's. It is a reproduction of one of the 'Hunts of Maximilian' tapestries - a series of 12 tapestries, one for each month of the year. The original set was completed in the 1530's and is now in the Louvre. This tapestry represents the month of March, the astrological sign of Aries which appears in the medallion at the top. The hunting scene is in the Sonian Forest depicting a view of Brussels to the towers of St. Gudula's church. A border surrounds this stunning scene. The 2 sides and the top have a gorgeous fruit, flower and bird design. The bottom is a frieze of sea gods. The tapestry is woven in wool in sumptuous texture. It is is very heavy (weighing well over 4 kg) and is of superb quality - the detail is astonishing. The tapestry has an overall subtle ochre glow with highlights of claret in the costumes. The tapestry is in very good vintage condition. There are little metal rings sewn on the back for hanging purposes. It measures :- 207 cm (6 ft 9.4 inches) wide x 137 cm (4 ft 5.9 inches) high. A fantastic vintage tapestry to add an authentic château chic statement to a room and another divine vintage textile find from La Belle Étoffe. N.B.
